OEM Substantially Decreases Warranty Claims for Heavy Duty Road Construction Equipment

An OEM of heavy duty road construction equipment decreased warranty claims poising them to increase market share in Latin American countries.

The OEM was selling their customers road construction equipment with an Allen Bradley PLC and HMI. This set up was failing frequently, likely due to high vibration, moisture, and temperatures the components were subjected to in an outdoor environment. They needed a quick solution and Hartfiel was able to help them out.

To solve the problem, the OEM worked with the Hartfiel Value Added Department. A controls enclosure and switch panel assemblies were developed utilizing IFM controller and display to replace the A-B PLC and display. IFM Mobile components are designed and rated to operate in mobile applications to handle the harsh environment: wide temperature variations, high humidity and moisture exposure, high vibration.

The solution will enable the OEM to increase their market share in South American countries, as well as any other country with a similar climate. By solving this problem the OEM’s brand reputation will increase in their area of expertise.

A manufacturer of Agricultural Equipment saves 16 hours of wiring labor per tool arm by utilizing a J1939 CAN-bus wiring solution.

It was time for a re-design of an OEM’s Anhydrous Ammonia Fertilizer distribution tool arm. The current set up consisted of an Impellicone Manifold for NH3 distribution and manual pressure gauges display mounted behind the driver on the tool arm. While operating the vehicle the driver would have to peer back, over their shoulder, to view the instrument gauge panel outside the vehicle, to confirm correct operation of the spray nozzles. Not catching a clogged nozzle right away results in a lower end output for the end user translating into less profit.

Hartfiel Automation, working through our Value Added Department, devised a winning solution for both the OEM and their End User. For the User, providing an internal, front facing panel display eliminates need for manual checking of valve flow and results in faster notification of clogged nozzle. Each nozzle’s pressure is continuously displayed in front of the driver on a Data Panel MC650 display, which also displays the following:
• digital display
• over-under tolerance faults
• automatic mean adjustment
• fault status for each nozzle.

The OEM wins by decreasing wires from hundreds to only four, saving 16 hours in wiring labor. Hartfiel provides a simple plug-and-play assembly utilizing J1939 (CAN-bus) communication protocol. The end product is a completely assembled manifold with GEM Sensors valves and transducers.
