Hartfiel help packaging OEM make it possible for pharmaceutical customer to reduce downtime and increase position accuracy when changing over to different size packages.
The OEM, who makes packaging machines for secondary packaging solutions, needed a cost effective way to automatically resize machines for varying size applications. The solution should not lose positioning feedback in the event of an emergency stop, shut down or power failure. OEM was using SIKO counters in conjunction with a ball screw and manual wheel with a tape measure fastened to the machine for position feedback. This required manual sizing and longer set up time.
Hartfiel recommended a Balluff Micropulse AT Linear Encoder. With the encoder the customer was able to obtain accurate position feedback and not lose feedback signal in the event of a power failure. They were able to automatically resize the machine for varying size packages without the cost of an expensive servo driven option.

A manufacturer of cartoners and case packers, user of traditional SMC and Festo cylinder switches, became interested in reviewing a new cylinder sensor technology. Their switches worked adequately but required a cord for each cylinder switch (2 sensors, 2 connectors). Hartfiel introduced Balluff V-Twin sensors as a single cord alternative.
With the Balluff V-Twin both sensors are connected to a single M12 quick connect and only requires one connection to serve both sensors (2 sensors, 1 connector). The result is ½ the cost for cords, ½ the cost for wiring labor and ½ the time for installation.
Balluff V-Twin sensors work with any brand name of cylinder containing a magnet on the piston. The sensors fit all round body, tie rod body and square body cylinder designs. They work with any magnet regardless if the original cylinder was equipped with a reed switch magnet or a solid state switch magnet. Balluff also provides an unheard of “lifetime warranty” on all their sensors and switches.
